30 Awesome Photographs of Urban Decay, Part 1
The allure of unwanted, unkempt buildings entices photographers from all over the world to cross boundaries (Keep Out and No Trespassing signs) and capture the environments and mystique of long-forgotten rooms, buildings, homes and workplaces. Part of the magic of such environments is knowing that in the past they were once filled with life – and with decay & neglect now leave only the imagination to wonder what went on. Pixellica presents Part 1 of a feature set highlighting excellent examples of unwanted exploration.

Darkness & Light – Illustrations by Javier
Pixellica presents a selection of astounding Photoshop illustrations that play on both darkness and light. Created by Javier, AKA PoisonVectors, these illustrations capture everything we love about Photoshop: Smoke, light, swirls, dark blending, and the people who are always at the center – though they always bear some resemblance to each other – who seem so oblivious to where they are but nonetheless so utterly captured by the the very illustration they inhabit.

24 Conceptual Futuristic & Dystopian Cities
Ever since the dystopian vision was created in 1982 by Ridley Scott’s “Blade Runner”, the way conceptual artists see the future has changed. From Blade Runner to Brazil, The Fifth Element to Minority Report (heck, even Mystery Men), conceptual artists have portrayed the future as a place of ginormous cities, flying cars and grungy, rainy street life. Pixellica presents an excellent sampling of dystopian concepts to stir the muse.
The Dramatic Photography of Fitnat Cimsit
Turkey-based photographer Fitnat Cimsit has a knack for shooting long perspective shots: Long hallways, alleyways, corridors, etc. Commonly her photographs amplify the “light at the end of the tunnel.” Any characters that make an appearance are usually obscured from identification, allowing us to put ourselves in the picture without being distracted by an unnamed face. It’s impossible not to notice a certain loneliness in her photographs as well.

Excellent Examples of Steampunk Lighting
Steampunk is a sub-genre of Science Fiction and goes on the premise that steam power and gearworks accomplish all modern technological achievements – such as steam-powered rockets and airships – and is heavily influenced by such writers as Jules Verne and H. G. Wells. Pixellica presents one small taste of the Steampunk world: Lamps – made to look like they work on early electronics and gears or something that at least has to be more involved than simply flicking a switch.
Fantastic Examples of Shadow Puppetry
Shadow puppets, or silhouette animation, originated in China during the Han Dyansty (c. AD206) and has since spread all over the globe. Shadow puppet troupes exist in over 20 countries and delight thousands of people each year. It’s amazing what can be accomplished with very primitive technology and a lot of creativity.
